Reading film

“Mise-en-scene” simply means how the different elements of the frame interact to tell a story. These elements are scenery, lighting, costumes, actors and movement within the frame, so everything, that happens in front of the camera. Through where and how they are located, we can determine, for example, the dominance of the characters in a scene. Whether they are in the foreground or background, well-lit or dark, it all gives a different message to the audience. We can understand the relationship between different elements, for example, if a character appears in a small size in a huge landscape, we get the impression that the person is insignificant compared to the great power of nature.
